“Poker is a microcosm of all we admire and disdain about capitalism and democracy. Poker can be rough-hewn or polished, warm or cold, charitable and caring, or hard and impersonal, fickle and elusive, but ultimately poker is fair, and right, and just.”

World Series of Poker 2010 November Nine

7,319 poker players took their seats in the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event. The list of players included 18 former world champions and nearly 150 gold bracelet winners.

Now the November Nine have been determined. After eight bloody days of fight nine players are left standing in poker’s most prestigious tournament. Jonathan Duhamel leads the way entering the four-month break with a stack of 65,975,000.

The final table winner will be crown WSOP 2010 champion and will take home about $9 Million prize.

It is for sure the most exciting time of the year for serious poker players! The World Series of Poker kicks off with a $40,000 buy-in, No Limit Hold'em event, followed by two events (usually) each day until the main event. In all, there are 57 events. Each of these WSOP tournaments is a grueling marathon that takes place over three days usually, and this goes on for five weeks! Simply put, in order for you to have any chance of making a deep run in these huge field events and winning a ton of money along with the most coveted piece of poker games jewelry in existence, you must be prepared - very prepared. So this piece (and some subsequent ones) will focus on just that, preparing for the WSOP. For this first instalment, I will focus on getting your mind and body ready for the big challenge.

5 Ways to Improve your Tournament Game
By James Campbell

     1. Position, Position, Position; most important aspect of tournament poker. Try to play as many hands as possible in position and limit the number of hands you play out of position.

     2. Mix it up a little at the start of tournaments. This is the time to see some flops play suited connectors, low pocket pairs, and try to hit a flop big and stack somebody who doesn't like to fold an overpair.

     3. With a stack less than 15-25bbs you are going to be limited to what you can do. You don't want to be raise/folding very often and you don't want to be calling other players raises with marginal hands. So play tight solid poker.

     4. With a stack of 15-25bbs you have a great "restealing stack". What I mean by this is if there is a late position raiser that has been active don't be afraid to reraise all in with marginal holdings. The raiser is going to need a big hand in order to call you and chances are he won't have it!

     5. When you are a big stack attack the other big stacks. Tournament poker is all about winning! All the money is in the top 3 places of every tournament so you want to give yourself the best opportunity to win and there is no better way to do that than to attack the other big stacks. Apply some extra pressure to them when you have position and force him/her to a tough decision.

You should make sure to get plenty of rest in the days leading up to the WSOP. It's also a good idea to set your sleep schedule to coincide with the times you will be playing. In other words, if you are staying at the Rio or close by, try to go to sleep around 3 am and wake up in time to be ready to play by noon. That's right, a typical day will last from noon to 2-3 am. You need to be sharp the whole time so condition your mind and body to be awake, alert and focused during those hours.

Eat healthy and do not over eat. Try to stay away from turkey because it contains L-tryptophan and that will make you drowsy and tired. Bring healthy snacks with you to keep your energy (blood sugar) levels constant. Also, during the dinner break, make sure to eat lightly, and again avoid steaks and turkey so as not to have a post dinner let down in energy.

Even a minimal amount of stretching and exercising is hugely beneficial during the day. Also make sure to oxygenate all day. Take huge deep breaths periodically and practice that as often as you can. Your brain and body need that extra oxygen. It will help you stay sharp.

Texas Hold’em strategy tips

What is important to know about Texas Hold’em in the beginning

To have a chance of winning the WSOP main event you have to master Texas Hold’em poker. A good Texas Hold’em poker player should understand the psychology of the opponent and be able to calculate the various options. It is believed that a good poker player is not the one that wins a lot of money, but the one who loses little. Your primary task is to increase your stack as much as possible. Simple to say, more difficult to achieve. A few points should be considered.

Since in Texas Hold'em poker the betting order (like in many poker games) is determined by the position of the dealer (the button) and does not change through the course of the hand, one's position during the betting rounds is a key factor in the game, and for example at the last position you can keep some cards that should have been fold in early position. After all, the latter your turn is, more the information you’ll manage to get, and as we all know, poker is a game of information.

Categories of hands

Despite the huge variety of combinations of cards, in poker there are only 169 variants of starting two-card hands, if you count the cards, differing only by suit, the same combinations, i.e. the Queen of spades and the Jack of spades, we equate to the Queen of hearts and the Jack of hearts. Of course, if the flop reveals three spades, the first of these combinations would be more advantageous, but not having the gift of prophecy, these hands before the flop are equivalent.

All these 169 variants can be divided into 5 main categories: pairs, cards in sequence, gapped hands, cards in sequence of one suit and gapped hands of one suit. In case you don’t have a pair, your two pocket cards can be of one or different suits, be in sequence or not, have one or more gaps. Obviously, with cards in sequence you have more chance to form a straight, and the more gaps you have, the less is the probability to form it. In case you are trying to form a flush with suited cards the gaps are not important, but the higher cards are preferable.
