With his back injury keeping him away from the golf course, Tiger Woods has been filling his time by hosting a poker tournament in Las Vegas. The 14-time major winner, who is currently working his way back after undergoing surgery, hosted his annual charity poker tournament at the Mandalay Bay in support of the Tiger Woods Foundation, with a string of sports stars and celebrities shelling out $10,000 to buy-in at the event that formed part of the yearly Tiger Jam Weekend.
The event was attended by poker legends Doyle Brunson, Antonio Esfandiari, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten, who pitted their wits against the amateurs. Other high-profile celebrities in attendance included Chris Harrison, Mark Cuban and Kunal Nayyar. South African poker player Kinesh Pather came out on top to claim victory, but the real winners of the night was the foundation, which saw $500,000 raised for its projects. The weekend ended with over £1 million being raised for the Tiger Woods Foundation.
While the focus on the event was on raising funds, Woods offered a brief update on his rehab, saying, “I’m just practicing and strengthening, and trying to get back… no hurry.” The American recently saw Adam Scott replace him at the top of the world rankings last month, rewarding those Betfair fans who backed the 33-year old to achieve that feat.
The Australian has been one of the most consistent players in the world over the past couple of years, and Tiger’s continued absence from the game through injury offered Scott the chance to reach the top of the rankings for the first time in his career as he continues to remain in the minds of Betfair fans in the run up to the second major of the year.
While Tiger will be keen to get back to action in order to reclaim his place as the world number one, he’ll be well aware of the dangers of returning to action too soon. But Woods’ continued absence from the golf course certainly opens up Betfair odds for The Open Championship and the US Open later this summer.
